Shipping chokepoints: ships through Hormuz, Suez and the world's narrow seas this week
🚢 Shipping chokepoints snapshotships through the world's narrow seas, against a year ago
Most of what Britain buys, burns and
eats has come through one of a handful of narrow sea passages. This counts the cargo ships and
tankers using each one this week, against the same week a year ago, and names the household
bill it feeds.
The counts are loading…
How this is worked out
iWhen a busy sea route goes quiet, ships take a longer way round or the cargo
does not move at all, and both tend to reach what you pay later: within weeks for petrol and
diesel, over months for gas bills and shop prices. This tile shows the ships only. It does not
say why a route has changed, or what that will do to any price.
