Fried calamari
Ingredients
- 300g Squid
- 200g Plain Flour
- 2 tblsp Capers
- 1 clove peeled crushed Garlic
- 5 tblsp Mayonnaise
- For frying Vegetable Oil
- To serve Lemon
Quantities are the original recipe’s. The cost is our own estimate — typical own-brand supermarket prices for these quantities, divided by 4 servings. TheMealDB does not state how many a dish serves, so 4 is our assumption, not theirs. Treat it as “about this much a head”, not a shopping bill.
Method
- Slice the squid into rings roughly ½cm wide.
- In a freezer bag, combine the flour, capers and a good seasoning of salt and pepper.
- Drop the squid into the bag and shake well so every piece is coated in the seasoned flour.
- Stir the crushed garlic through the mayonnaise and spoon into a serving bowl.
- Pour oil into a large, deep pan so it comes about 7cm up the sides, filling it no more than a third full, and set over a medium heat.
- Check the oil is hot enough by dropping in a small piece of bread — it should sizzle on contact.
- Lift a handful of squid from the flour, shaking off the excess, and lower gently into the hot oil.
- Fry for about 3 mins until golden and crisp, then lift out with a slotted spoon onto kitchen paper.
- Fry the rest of the squid in batches the same way.
- Serve immediately with the garlic mayonnaise and lemon wedges.
