UKHSA data shows TB notifications in England remain level
Tuberculosis notifications in England in 2025 were 5,449, similar to the 5,485 recorded in 2024, UKHSA has published. Provisional data indicates an 8.2% fall in the first three quarters of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
The UK Health Security Agency has published annual data showing that tuberculosis notifications in England in 2025 remained level with the previous year. Dr Esther Robinson, Head of the TB Unit at UKHSA, stated: "While notifications haven't increased in the past year, TB remains a serious public health issue."
Figures published with the announcement show that 82.3% of TB notifications in 2025 were in people born outside the UK. London recorded the highest notification rate at 20.2 per 100,000 population. In the most deprived areas of England, people were 6.9 times more likely to be diagnosed with TB than those in the least deprived areas. The notification rate in these deprived areas rose from 14.5 per 100,000 in 2019 to 19.4 per 100,000 in 2025.
Provisional data indicates that TB notifications fell by 8.2% in the first three quarters of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This data applies to England and covers the period up to the end of the third quarter of 2026. The announcement does not provide a specific timeline for when the full 2026 annual data will be released.
A cough lasting longer than 3 weeks, usually with mucus, is identified as a symptom of TB. The agency advises that people who have moved to England from countries where TB is common should know the symptoms and get tested through their GP. In 2025, 2.1% of people with TB notifications had multi-drug resistant TB.
