Track replacement planned at Lowestoft station in November
Network Rail has announced that engineers will replace 50-year-old track at Lowestoft station. The work is scheduled for four days in November and will see buses replace trains on several routes.
Network Rail has announced plans to replace 50-year-old track in platforms 2 and 3 at Lowestoft station. The work is necessary because the ground beneath the rails is saturated and oil from old trains is deteriorating the track bed. Engineers will use a vacuum machine to remove old ballast and replace it with fresh material, as well as replacing sleepers and rails.
The work is scheduled to take place between Friday 13 – Monday 16 November inclusive. During this period, buses will replace trains on several routes, including between Lowestoft and Norwich, and Lowestoft and Oulton Broad South. Joe Kennedy, Infrastructure Director working as part of GBR Anglia, said: "We're really sorry for the disruption, especially on the two weekdays, but this is a big job that we must get done to maintain a reliable railway."
Some train services will continue to operate, specifically between Ipswich and Oulton Broad South, and between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Passengers are advised to check travel information at greateranglia.co.uk before travelling. The announcement does not specify the exact times of the bus replacements or the duration of each journey.
