Northern Ireland Executive launches biomethane consultation

The Northern Ireland Executive has launched a public consultation on the development of a sustainable biomethane sector. The process runs until 15 December 2026. Minister Archibald said the sector can support investment and jobs.

The Northern Ireland Executive has announced the start of a consultation on developing a sustainable biomethane sector. The process began on 20 October 2026 and remains open for public views until 15 December 2026. Officials describe biomethane as a renewable gas that can help decarbonise heat for homes and businesses.

Minister Archibald stated: "Developed sustainably, biomethane can play an important role in our future energy mix, supporting investment and jobs, creating opportunities in rural areas and strengthening our agri-food sector and wider supply chain." The department notes that Northern Ireland has a strong potential feedstock base for the sector due to its agri-food industry. Biomethane can be used to replace natural gas, produce electricity, or serve as vehicle fuel.

A previous call for evidence was conducted in 2024 to inform policy development, with 200 renewable gas stakeholders addressed. Minister Muir emphasised that any future sector must be guided by strong environmental principles. Public confidence will depend on the sector delivering positive environmental outcomes while avoiding unintended consequences.
