NHS Greater Manchester selected to run Care Together mental health pilot

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board will run a new mental health pilot called Care Together. The scheme embeds mental health professionals in social care teams to support up to 7,000 children and young people.

NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board has been selected to lead a new mental health initiative for young people supported by social care. The Department of Health and Social Care announced that the pilot, named Care Together, will see mental health professionals from NHS services embedded directly within children’s social care teams. This structure is designed to replace fragmented provision with faster access to expert, needs-led support.

The Government is investing up to £9.4 million over three years to deliver the programme. It will operate in collaboration with Stockport, Tameside, and Rochdale local authorities. Dame Diana Johnson, Minister of State for Public Health and Patient Safety, said: "We are committed to change how we support young people, and this exciting and innovative pilot will see thousands more children across Greater Manchester get specialist mental health support based on their personal needs and in quicker time, before they reach crisis point."

The pilot covers up to 7,000 children and young people, as well as their parents, carers, and/or guardians. It follows Professor Fonagy’s independent review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism. The aim is to reduce the need for families to navigate multiple services, ensuring support is tailored to individual needs rather than being dispersed across different providers.
