Network Rail warns of weekend rail disruptions due to stormy weather

Network Rail has announced line closures and speed restrictions for the weekend of 25 and 26 October due to Storm Boelo. Passengers are advised to check travel plans before setting out.

Network Rail has advised passengers to check their travel plans ahead of stormy weather forecast for the North West of England and Scotland. The infrastructure manager announced specific line closures and speed restrictions for the weekend of 25 and 26 October, citing heavy rain and strong winds expected from Storm Boelo.

Ross Davies, Network Rail North West network operations director, said: "Our team in the control centre and also out on track are ready to deal with the weekend's stormy weather, but the high winds and heavy rain are likely to cause short notice cancellations to trains." Under the plans, the section of the Cumbrian Coast line between Whitehaven and Carlisle will be closed starting at 9pm on Saturday night. Speed restrictions will also apply to routes north of Carlisle in Scotland, leading to reduced or cancelled services.

The guidance applies to passengers travelling on the West Coast Main Line, North West, and Cumbrian rail routes during the stated period. Residents living near the railway are urged to secure loose garden items to prevent them from being blown onto the tracks. Network Rail teams are prepared to respond to weather-related incidents on these routes.

Passengers are directed to check National Rail Enquiries and individual train operator live disruption pages before travelling. The national helpline number is 03457 11 41 41. The announcement does not specify the exact number of services that will be cancelled.
