NATO patrol aircraft train in northern Scotland
Maritime patrol aircraft from Germany, France and the UK have completed Exercise Strike Warrior in northern Scotland. Royal Air Force announced the operation focused on enhancing NATO interoperability and maritime security, operating from RAF Lossiemouth.
Royal Air Force has announced that maritime patrol aircraft from Germany, France and the United Kingdom participated in Exercise Strike Warrior. The training took place in northern Scotland, with operations centred on RAF Lossiemouth. The exercise aimed to enhance NATO interoperability and maritime security through combined exercises.
Participating forces focused on anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and the integration of air and maritime capabilities. French Navy personnel from the 23rd Maritime Patrol Squadron took part with their aircraft, while the German Navy used P-8A Poseidon aircraft acquired in 2025. This marked the second major exercise participation for the German Poseidon force from RAF Lossiemouth this year. Commander Philipp Detachment Commander noted: "One of the highlights of the exercise has been the opportunity to operate alongside our UK counterparts and put our crews and aircraft through realistic and demanding scenarios."
The cooperation reflects the defence partnership established by the Trinity House Agreement signed in October 2024. Aircraft operated as both defending and opposing forces alongside other assets. Typhoon fighter aircraft from IX(B) Squadron also took part in surface warfare training with US Navy assets. Lieutenant Maxime added that sharing information and combining capabilities remains vital as platforms become more capable.
