MHRA reports strong immune response to Strep A vaccine in mice
The MHRA has published research showing a novel Strep A vaccine approach generated strong immune responses in a mouse model. The study, conducted with GSK Vaccines, targets mucosal surfaces and systemic immunity. The research was in animals.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published new research demonstrating that a novel vaccine approach against Strep A generated strong immune responses in a mouse model. The work was carried out in partnership with the GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health and forms part of the MHRA's wider research programme.
The study, published in Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics in October 2026, utilises Generalised Modules for Membrane Antigens (GMMA) as a carrier and adjuvant. According to the MHRA, the vaccine targets immunity at the mucosal surfaces of the nose and throat while also inducing a systemic immune response. Dr Fatme Mawas, Head of Conjugate Vaccines at the MHRA, said: "By delivering a Strep A vaccine through the nose or under the tongue, we showed that strong immune responses were generated both at the mucosal surfaces where infection begins and throughout the body, supporting protection against invasive disease."
Figures cited in the announcement indicate an estimated 600 million Strep A infections worldwide each year, with 500,000 deaths responsible by associated complications. Currently, there is no licensed vaccine for Strep A. The agency stated that this method may facilitate administration and access in regions with high disease burden.
The research was conducted in a mouse model, representing pre-clinical evidence. No further details on human trials or timelines for clinical testing were provided in the announcement.
