Met Office issues yellow wind warning for southern UK
A yellow severe weather warning for wind is in effect for the south of the UK on Thursday night and Friday, the Met Office has said. Gusts of 50-60mph are possible, potentially reaching 70mph in exposed coastal areas. The specific location of the strongest winds depends on the position of the low-pressure system.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow severe weather warning for wind covering the south of the UK. The warning is valid from Friday 0000 to 1200, highlighting the potential for unsettled conditions during the weekend.
Gusts of 50-60mph are expected, with speeds possibly reaching 70mph in exposed coastal locations. Deputy Chief forecaster Tom Crabtree said: "An area of the forecast we're particularly focusing on is the development of a potentially deep area of low pressure that could cross the UK overnight on Thursday and through Friday."
Friday is forecast to be wet and windy, with the low pressure moving into the North Sea later in the afternoon. Colder air is anticipated to move across the UK from Friday night into Saturday.
The guidance notes that the exact location of the strongest winds will be determined by the position of the low-pressure system. The depth and position of the low remain uncertain at this stage.
