Met Office issues yellow warnings for gales and rain in parts of UK
The Met Office has announced yellow severe weather warnings for parts of Scotland and the western UK. Gales and rain are expected to cause disruption on coasts and higher ground. Conditions are forecast to settle from Wednesday.
The Met Office has published yellow severe weather warnings for parts of Scotland and western areas of the UK. The warnings are active for Monday and Tuesday due to gales and rain that may cause disruption. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: "While the start of this week will be notably wet and windy, high pressure is expected to bring a quieter spell of weather later in the week."
Strong winds are expected in Wales, western England, southwest Scotland, and eastern Northern Ireland from Monday 1800 - Tuesday 0300. On Tuesday, the strongest winds will affect Scotland, particularly the far north and northwest, with gusts over 70mph possible. The Hebrides are most likely to experience the strongest winds, which could last several hours.
Monday will be wet and windy, with rain moving across southern and western areas before spreading northeast. Coastal flooding is a potential risk, particularly in northern areas on Monday. The impact is limited to parts of Scotland and western areas of the UK, with exposed coasts and higher ground facing the highest risk.
From Wednesday, high pressure is expected to influence the UK, bringing less frequent showers and easing winds for most areas. The announcement does not provide specific figures for rainfall accumulation or the exact number of households at risk from coastal flooding.
