Lords to debate refugee sponsorship plans

The House of Lords will debate the government's assessment of refugee resettlement numbers and sponsor support on 29 October 2026. According to House of Lords Library, the existing community sponsorship scheme dates back to 2016. The government expects resettled refugee numbers to start in the hundreds and grow to the low thousands.

House of Lords Library has confirmed that the chamber is scheduled to consider a question regarding the government's assessment of refugee resettlement numbers and support for sponsors. The debate is set to take place on 29 October 2026, focusing on how the state plans to manage the influx of new arrivals and the structures in place to support those who sponsor them.

The current community sponsorship scheme was established in 2016, allowing approved community groups to support refugees. In November 2025, the government announced that refugee sponsorship would become the main framework for resettlement. Under these plans, three new sponsorship routes are being established: named community, study, and work. The named community route will allow sponsors to select refugees, a change from the current scheme.

The government expects the number of resettled refugees to start in the hundreds and grow to the low thousands. However, annual caps on admissions and details of support for sponsors have not yet been announced. Refugee charities have welcomed the new routes but have called for more support and resources for sponsors.

The announcement cites a Migration Observatory report dated 14 July 2026 and a United Nations Refugee Agency page accessed on 22 October 2026. Another Migration Observatory report dated 14 September 2026 is also referenced in the documentation provided to the House of Lords.
