Liverpool Street lift to close for refurbishment from 22 November

Network Rail has announced that the passenger lift at London Liverpool Street will close for major refurbishment starting on Sunday 22 November. The work is expected to finish in mid-February 2027. Passengers must use step-free alternative routes during the closure.

Network Rail has confirmed that a major refurbishment of the passenger lift at London Liverpool Street is set to begin on Sunday 22 November. The lift currently connects the main concourse to the upper level, the Elizabeth line, and the eastbound Tube platforms. Sara Ashmore Barrios, Liverpool Street Station Manager working as part of GBR Anglia, described the project as vital work to improve the reliability of the facility and keep it operating for years to come.

The overhaul involves replacing the hydraulics, cleaning the shaft, and installing new lighting, flooring, and control panels. A remote condition monitoring system will also be installed to detect potential faults early. The Great Eastern Railway War Memorial will be protected during the works. The lift is expected to reopen in mid-February 2027.

The lift will be unavailable for use during the construction period. Passengers who rely on the lift will need to use step-free alternative routes, which may involve a longer journey. The announcement notes that the step-free interchange at Stratford is available as an alternative. Barrios added that the team is sorry for the disruption this will cause to passengers who rely on the lift.

The announcement does not specify the exact duration of the daily outages or the specific times the alternative routes will be operational.
