Home Office opens charity sponsorship applications for refugee routes

Applications for charities to become lead sponsors under new UK refugee routes opened on 29 October, the Home Office announced. First arrivals via the Named Community Sponsorship and Refugee Study routes are expected next autumn. The number of arrivals will be capped based on community capacity.

The Home Office has confirmed that applications for charities to serve as lead sponsors under the UK’s new safe and legal refugee routes opened on 29 October. Anna Turley, Border Security & Asylum Minister, said: "Communities across the country will now be able to welcome refugees fleeing war and persecution - helping them put down roots and rebuild their lives."

Under the plans, lead sponsors must be registered UK charities or non-profits with good reputations and appropriate safeguards. These organisations will support local groups, such as churches and universities, to welcome refugees. The department expects the first arrivals through the Named Community Sponsorship and Refugee Study routes to arrive next autumn. A separate refugee work route will open for applications in spring 2027.

Refugees will receive help with accommodation, education, employment, and local services. Ministers are scheduled to meet with charities and not-for-profits in the coming weeks to hear their views. Matthew Bolton, CEO at Citizens UK, noted: "Named Sponsorship builds on Britain's rich tradition of offering sanctuary, putting the power to welcome into the hands of local communities who are ready and able to help people in need find a place to call home."

The number of arrivals will be capped based on community capacity. This limit applies to the overall intake under the new sponsorship schemes. The announcement does not specify the exact numerical cap for the first year of arrivals.
