HMRC urges Self Assessment users to file by January 2027
HMRC is urging customers to file their Self Assessment returns for the 2025 to 2026 tax year before the 31 January 2027 deadline, according to UKRI. Around 12 million people are expected to submit a tax return by this date.
UKRI has published details of HMRC’s call for Self Assessment customers to file their tax returns for the 2025 to 2026 tax year before the 31 January 2027 deadline. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, said: "The Self Assessment deadline is 100 days away so now is the ideal time to get ahead and file your tax return early."
Around 12 million people are expected to submit a tax return by the deadline. Customers can file their returns via GOV.UK. New Self Assessment users must register to receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference before filing. Those with a PAYE income can file online before 30 December to have tax owed collected via their tax code.
The deadline for paper Self Assessment tax returns is 31 October 2026. HMRC warns that criminals often impersonate them to steal money or personal information. Support and guidance, including videos and a digital assistant, are available on GOV.UK.
