Government to deliver debt relief scheme in spring 2027
The UK Government has committed to delivering a Debt Relief Scheme in spring 2027, according to Money Advice Trust. The charity said the measure will support those affected by the energy bills crisis, with four in 10 National Debtline clients holding energy arrears.
The UK Government has published a strategy to tackle energy debt, including a commitment to deliver a Debt Relief Scheme in spring 2027. Money Advice Trust responded to the Budget and the Energy Debt Circuit Breaker strategy, welcoming the commitment. Steve Vaid, Chief Executive of the Money Advice Trust, stated: "The Government deserves credit for coming forward with a comprehensive strategy to tackle the £5 billion in energy debt which is weighing British households down."
Figures published with the announcement show that four in 10 people helped by National Debtline have energy arrears. The average amount owed by these individuals is more than £3,000. The Chancellor also announced a £100 household energy payment as part of the broader strategy to address financial pressures on households.
A one-off payment is not a long-term solution, according to the charity. Cost of living pressures mean more people will continue to fall into financial difficulty in the months ahead. The organisation has led a coalition of charities calling for the debt relief scheme to be delivered as planned.
