Government launches social media push to boost flu jabs
The Department of Health and Social Care has announced a new social media campaign and an NHS App feature to help people book flu vaccinations. The initiative aims to increase uptake among eligible groups ahead of winter.
The Department of Health and Social Care has launched a social media campaign on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok to promote flu vaccination. A new feature on the NHS App allows users to check their eligibility and book appointments at community pharmacies. Health Minister James Frith stated: "It has never been easier to find out if you are eligible and get vaccinated, helping protect yourself and reduce pressure on the NHS during the winter season."
Figures published with the announcement show that 10 million flu vaccinations have been delivered since bookings opened, with 2.7 million administered this week. The MAVIS programme has been accelerated to cover 14,000 schools this year. A catch-up programme for school children who missed earlier vaccinations will launch later this year from community pharmacies.
Eligibility for the free flu vaccine is focused on vulnerable groups, including young children, older adults, and people with long-term health conditions. The department notes that flu can cause serious complications, hospital treatment, and death, particularly for those most at risk. Vaccination is described as one of the best defences to prevent serious illness and avoidable admissions.
