Government establishes AI Biosecurity Lab with £300mn backing

The Cabinet Office has announced the creation of the AI Biosecurity Lab to strengthen UK resilience against biological threats. The initiative is backed by £300mn in total funding and commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The Cabinet Office has announced that the government is establishing the AI Biosecurity Lab. This new body will be the world’s first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, aiming to help the UK understand, prevent, detect, and respond to biological threats.

The project is supported by £100 million in government funding and up to £200 million in commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, totalling £300mn. Initial delivery will focus on enhancing early detection of emerging biological threats and accelerating the development of vaccines, treatments, and other medical countermeasures.

Under the plans, the lab will collaborate with public-sector bodies, academic institutions, industry partners, and frontier AI companies in the UK and internationally. The Government intends for the lab to be supported by both public and philanthropic funding.
