FCDO updates travel advice for specific areas in Mexico

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has published updated travel advice for Mexico, advising against all but essential travel to specific areas in several states. The department notes that travel insurance may be invalidated if a person travels against this guidance.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has issued new travel guidance for Mexico. The advice recommends against all but essential travel to designated areas within Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato. The restrictions apply to specific cities, states, and road networks identified in the official announcement.

In Baja California, the guidance covers Tijuana and Tecate, including the roads between the two cities. Exceptions are made for airside transit, the Cross Border Xpress bridge, and specific toll roads. In Chihuahua, the advice excludes the city of Chihuahua, the Ciudad Juárez border crossing, specific toll roads, and the Copper Canyon rail route. The same rail route is an exception in Sinaloa, alongside Los Mochis, Mazatlán, and specific roads.

For Tamaulipas, the restriction applies except for the Nuevo Laredo border crossing and areas south of federal highways 80, 81 and 85. In Zacatecas, the advice covers the entire state. In Guanajuato, the restriction targets areas south-west of road 45D. Other excluded routes include federal toll roads 1D, 15D, 126, 43, 48D, 14D, 15, and 85D, as well as state highway 16 and road 32.

The announcement states that travel insurance may be invalidated if a person travels against the advice. The guidance does not specify a start or end date for these restrictions, nor does it provide details on how the advice might change in the future.
