The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has updated its travel advice for Ethiopia, citing increased tensions and the presence of armed groups. The new guidance specifies that travellers should avoid specific regions and areas close to international boundaries.
The advice warns against all travel to the Tigray, Amhara and Gambela regions. It also prohibits travel to within 20km of the border with Sudan and within 10km of the border with South Sudan. In the Afar region, the guidance advises against travel to within 20km of the Eritrean border and within 50km of the Tigrayan boundary.
Further restrictions apply to the Somali region, where travel is advised against to within 100km of the borders with Somalia and Kenya in most areas. In the Fafan zone, the exclusion zone extends to 30km from the Somali border. Border areas with Kenya in the Central, Southern, Sidama and South West regions are also restricted to a 10km zone.
The department has not stated a specific date for when these restrictions will be lifted or reviewed. The guidance applies to all British nationals travelling to the specified areas.
