Cancer Research UK confirms £18m for new fellowships

Cancer Research UK has announced an £18m investment to fund 12 Career Development Fellowships. The scheme is supported by a £9m commitment from The ALBORADA Trust, which the charity will match.

Cancer Research UK has announced that The ALBORADA Trust has committed £9m to fund a new cohort of Career Development Fellows. The Trust, founded by Kirsten Rausing in 2001, has supported the charity's work since 2005.

Cancer Research UK will match the Trust’s commitment, resulting in a total investment of £18m and 12 Fellowships. Michelle Mitchell OBE, Chief Executive, said: "Progress against cancer depends on a steady pipeline of outstanding researchers bringing bold new ideas, expertise and discoveries into the field".

The fellowships are designed to support researchers at a critical point in their careers to help them establish independent research programmes. Initial funding for the Trust was based on the racecourse earnings of the Founder’s homebred World Champion filly ALBORADA.

Previous funding from the Trust included support for research infrastructure at the Cambridge Institute and an MB-PhD studentship. The new partnership coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Trust being celebrated.
