Welsh Government has confirmed that Bluetongue virus serotype 3 is present on nearly 500 farms in Wales. The department advises livestock keepers to prepare for the 2027 season. Vaccination is identified as the primary long-term protection measure.
Welsh Government has confirmed that Bluetongue virus serotype 3 has been detected on nearly 500 farms across Wales. The announcement highlights the scale of the outbreak and urges livestock keepers to take immediate action to protect their animals ahead of the 2027 season. Dr Richard Irvine, Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, stated: "We are now reaching a significant milestone, with almost 500 farms across Wales with confirmed BTV-3 cases this season."
Figures published with the announcement show that there are 498 confirmed cases of BTV-3 in Wales as of 29/10/2026. The department expects the virus to persist over the winter and recur next year. Livestock keepers are advised to speak with their vet to place vaccine orders in good time, as vaccination is described as the only viable long-term measure to protect livestock against Bluetongue.
Keepers must also check the Bluetongue status and vaccination history of any replacement animals before bringing them onto their holding. Those who suspect a case of Bluetongue are legally required to report it to APHA immediately by calling 0300 303 8268. The guidance applies to all livestock keepers in Wales and remains in effect as the virus continues to circulate.
