Autumn Budget confirms £100 energy payment for English households
The Autumn Budget has announced a £100 Household Energy Payment for eligible homes in England, according to Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Payments are scheduled to begin in January 2027. The main payment applies only to Council Tax bands A to D.
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has confirmed a new £100 Household Energy Payment as part of the Autumn Budget. The scheme is designed for households in England that are liable for council tax on their main home. It will also provide additional funding for local authorities and other UK nations to offer similar support based on local needs.
Up to 20 million households are expected to be eligible for the direct payment. Figures published with the announcement show that 83% of fuel-stressed households in England will qualify, while 88% of households in the bottom three income deciles are included. For those paying by direct debit, the money will be transferred directly to their bank account without the need to apply. An additional £100 million is allocated for local authorities to support households not eligible for the main rebate, potentially including the £150 Warm Home Discount.
The payment is limited to Council Tax bands A to D in England and requires the property to be a main home. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will receive separate funding to provide support tailored to their specific requirements. The government has committed to driving down energy costs to be in line with Europe within 10 years through market reform.
The announcement does not specify the exact date within January 2027 when the first payments will be processed. It also does not detail the specific criteria local authorities will use to distribute the additional £100 million in discretionary support.
